Fire District #9: Rectors

Firefighters march in a parade with a banner that reads "Rectors Volunteer Fire Department, Glenville, NY"

The last of the Glenville Fire Districts to incorporate, the department was founded in September 1955. The initial membership of 28 firefighters held their first meetings at the Old Fort Club. E. A. Nichols was the first Fire Chief, and Arthur Englert served as the first President and Assistant Chief. The original fire commissioners were W. McMichael, E. A. Nichols, W. R. Brown, Louis Larrabee, and Arthur Englert.

The first fire truck was donated by the Rotterdam Fire District No. 2. In 1957, the district was incorporated and a $40,000 bond issue was approved. The building that housed the fire station and land were then purchased from Louis Jeffer, and a 30’ x 40’ garage was constructed. Also purchased at that time was a new pumper and tanker.

In 1993, as Fire District No. 1- Hoffman’s was being dissolved, Rectors agreed to split coverage of the district with the West Glenville Fire District.

In January of 1997, the Rectors Volunteer Fire Department closed its doors and merged with the Beukendaal Volunteer Fire Department, extending the district to the west and ending at the Montgomery County line.
