Watershed

A watershed is land that sheds or across which stormwater drains into a water body. In Glenville, a system of tributaries and subtributaries (hereinafter, tribs) course through town. Eventually the tribs drain into the Mohawk River. The surrounding lands that sit higher than the tribs send runoff into the water bodies. That surface runoff may contain contaminants. For example, water that crosses a parking lot or roadway may collect automotive oils and gas, salt from winter ice treatments or trash – solids are called “floatables”. Surface runoff across lawns may convey fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides. Collectively, the contaminants have the capacity to harm water quality and ecosystems.
