The GECC is an advisory body to the Planning and Zoning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, and Town Board. The GECC's primary role is to conduct the initial review of various planning and zoning applications (i.e. subdivision, site plan, conditional use permit, zoning change, use variance, etc.) and to make a recommendation on whether or not the application could result in a significant environmental impact. On occasion, and as directed by the Town Board, the GECC analyzes and offers recommendations on various environmental issues. This may include everything from the potential health effects from high voltage power lines to the possible environmental impacts of the proposed power plant at the Scotia-Glenville Industrial Park.

The GECC is a five-member commission appointed by the Town Board. Each member's term is subject to reappointment on a yearly basis.
