The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has released new preliminary floodplain maps. The changes to the floodplains maps are significant in a number of geographic areas, resulting in many properties being taken out of the floodplain and some being added to the floodplain. The end result is that a number of homeowners will benefit from no longer having to pay for flood insurance. Others will now have to carry flood insurance if the new maps are adopted as presented.
A Public Open House has been scheduled for residents to review the new maps and to ask questions of FEMA officials and representatives of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The open house will take place on Thursday, December 3rd at the Rotterdam Town Hall (2nd flood board room), 1100 Sunrise Boulevard. The Open House will run from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. You are welcome to attend the open house anytime during this four-hour period.
