DOT GLENRIDGE RD PROJECT UPDATE - AUG. 2010

The project to improve the section of Glenridge Road “between the bridges” has been discussed and planned for over 20 years. Town officials recently met with officials from the NYS Department of Transportation who provided the following information on this project. Please note that this summary is reflective of current plans which are subject to change at New York State’s discretion.

·       The project is a “go.”  The final design includes the roundabout at the intersection of Glenridge Road and Maple Avenue. The height of the two underpasses won’t change; only the width will be different. The new dimensions include two 11-foot travel lanes and two 6-foot shoulders under both rail lines.

·       DOT has secured the necessary easements and property takings, including land from the Town to accommodate straightening the curve on Glenridge Road between the bridges.

·       Construction will take about 2 ½ years, beginning in the spring of 2011.  The first year will predominantly involve utility relocations and grading along the railroad lines. The bulk of the “real” construction will take place in 2012 and 2013.

·       Temporary road closures and detours will occur during three phases of the construction.  Two of the closures will be relatively brief (1 to 3 days) but there will be a 72-80 day closure of Glenridge Road during the summer of 2013.

·       Two of the road closures, including the 72+ day closure, will necessitate a detour through Alplaus, via Bruce Drive and Alplaus Avenue. To accommodate this new traffic pattern, DOT will install a temporary traffic signal at the intersection of Maple Avenue and Alplaus Avenue, unless the County has already installed a permanent traffic signal at this location.
